A Real Love Story
Set in the 60's, it takes you through the lost loves on one man, looking for real love. It had alittle bit of everything, laughter, tears, and history.

I found the book very interesting for it is written by a man. I picked it up and wasn't able to put it down until I finished. It's a must read.

I give it 5 stars. Happy reading.

A Real Love Story
The book is easy to read and moves rapidly along and you wont want to put it down. The author seems to be a true romantic and has a dry sense of humor.

Reports from America: William Howard Russell and the Civil War
Published in Hardcover by Sutton Publishing (January, 2002)
Author: Ilana D. Miller
Average review score:

Russell
This is an extremely well written book. It was my introduction to William Howard Russell and I found it interesting and informing. The book can also serve as a primary for the introduction of the attitudes and feeling of the beginning of the Civil War. Russell was probably the father of war reporting at least the kind of reporting that took us through Viet Nam.

A Great Read!
This is a well written book, The author connected William Russells life to important events in history. I had never heard of this man, but he had a fascinating life.
I couldn't put this book down.
Ms. Miller is a gifted writer and I will look forword to her next book. I'm glad it came out before Christmas as I bought some copies for gifts.

Rosemary Rose: Tiffany's Guide to Making Brighter Rainbows
Published in Paperback by Wood N Barnes (August, 2000)
Authors: Tiffany Couch and Kathy Howard
Average review score:

Everyone could use a little "fun" therapy!
This is a wonderful children's book for ALL ages! The text and illustrations are both light-hearted and poignant. The text is written in delightful rhyme reminiscent of Dr. Seuss and Ludwig Bemelmans. When Rosemary Rose, who makes rainbows, can't seem to get her colors just right, she is sent to Tiffany Espree for a "cure." Tiffany takes Rosemary on a wonderful journey (in Tiffany's own backyard!) and shows her the importance of good, old-fashioned play. I wonder how many children -- who these days can be so hooked into TV, Nintendo, and extra-curricular activities -- get "time off" to reap the joys of building sand castles, climbing trees, and finding pictures in the clouds. I know my family (kids and parents alike) would certainly benefit from a little of Tiffany's "fun" therapy! What makes this book particularly neat is the story of how it came to be. (Read the Afterword first!) The author worked as a child psychologist and wrote the book at the request of a seven-year-old patient, who gave the book its title and helped write the beginning of the story. A few year later, a friend of the author gave her the illustrations as a gift. Both the book and its origin are testaments to teamwork and friendship. Parents: read this book to your children, read it for your own enjoyment and, most importantly, "make time to do the things you love on the way."

A wonderful book for children of all ages!
This is a great book with a message that appeals to both adults and children. Children find the book entertaining and fun and adults appreciate its powerful message to keep life in balance by taking the time to play and enjoy life. The "story behind the story," which is summarized in the afterword, is amazing and heart-warming. The illustrations are bright and charming and create a tone of joy and livliness in this uplifting story. It is a must- read for all kids ages 3 to 103!

The story is about a girl (Rosemary Rose) who works in a factory making rainbows. She discovers that her "blues aren't true" because she is stressed and doesn't take the time to play. She seeks a "specialist" named Tiffany Espree, who leads her on several adventures to show her the importance of play. After Rosemary Rose spends some time with Tiffany Espree, she regains balance in her life and her "Blue Toe Vertigo is Vertigone!"

This is a delightful, whimsical, and therapeutic story that is a good book to read and re-read and/or to give as a gift. It would also be great to use in a professional/ counseling-type setting. Everyone should have this book!

Science in Medieval Islam : An Illustrated Introduction
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (November, 1997)
Author: Howard R. Turner
Average review score:

Uncommonly Cool
This is an extremely terrific introduction to an unfortunately little-known topic. In fifteen chapters and an epilogue, we are treated here to articulate, carefully crafted commentary and overviews of a myriad of medieval Islamic scientific, pseudo-scientific, and philosophical milieus. Turner presents us with chapters upon astronomy, medicine, geography, alchemy, and mathematics, among many other topics, as well as the Greek, Egyptian, Roman, Babylonian, etc. roots of the traditions surveyed. Each chapter includes intelligently selected material, which is oftentimes broken down into various subsections, for increased clarity and focus. One thing that the new reader of this book might want to be aware of is that the body of text in most chapters is literally only five to ten pages long. A lot of information is conveyed in the sections at the end of each chapter, which consist of beautiful (black and white) photographs and illustrations of various medieval islamic scientific instruments, observatories, learning academies, etc. Below the photographs are pithy, well-written commentaries upon the objects in the photographs. Don't skip over these commentaries -- they contain some of the best material in the book. Also watch for the helpful timeline in an appendix at the end, the glossary of unfamiliar Arabic vocabulary, and the very useful bibliography. Definitely take the time to scan through the bibliography, if you have any interest in pursuing further work in this area. It contains most of the classic works on this topic, and many lesser-known articles, books, etc.

Many people reading this may be interested in the historical background of Islam, or in the medieval period in and of itself. For people who come to this book from curiosity about how our classical heritage was preserved during the centuries between Rome and the Renaissance, (i.e., while the Islamic world was keeping the scholarly and scientific traditions alive, and Europe generally went to pieces), I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend "Scribes and Scholars: A Guide to the Transmission of Latin and Greek Literature," by L.D. Reynolds. The title tells you what that book is about, and it's very well done.

This book is very interesting, very well-researched, and beautifully presented. Two enthusiastic thumbs up.

The pictures alone can tell the story.
I was fortunate to read this in manuscript and knew that it was something most readers would like because of the wonderful illustrations. Readers cannot find a better place to begin to understand the fantastic developments in the Islamic world at a time when Europe had lost most ancient knowledge. It will probably become a required book for most courses dealing with the Islamic and Arabic civilizations.

A Second Course in Stochastic Processes
Published in Hardcover by Academic Press (May, 1981)
Authors: Samuel, Karlin and Howard M. Taylor
Average review score:

sequel to a first course
Karlin and Taylor wrote a classic text on stochastic processes in their "A First Course in Stochastic Processes". The second edition of that text was published in 1975. This sequel came out in 1981. It is not only a second course but it is also intended as a second volume on a larger course in stochastic processes. The authors show that they are continuing from teh first course by picking up with Chapter 10 after the first book ended with Chapter 9. Many of the topics in the first book are continued in this text including Markov chains and Diffusions. Heavy emphasis is placed on point processes and their applications including Poisson and compound Poisson processes, population growth models and queueing processes.

A MUST-HAVE IF YOU WANNA GO TO WALLSTREET!
In financial derivatives, people are generally dealing with all kinds of stochastic processes. This second course focuses on diffusion processes and prepares one with adequate knowledge to go ahead and understand how options are priced. This book itself does not touch any financial theory and will be of great use to people in genetics, mathematics and physics alike (finance also, of course). The authors give a chart of logical dependence of all the chaptors so you do not need to read every single corner if you are only interested in a specific topic. Readers are assumed to know Calculus and some basic probability theory. Knowledge of Brownian motion is not required and the authors succeded in keeping the math accessible. Although a mature senior might undertake this book, math in this book is not sloppy at all. Another thing I liked this book very much is there are so many excersices at the end of each chapter and one can check if he understands the materials or not. It's quite fair to give this book five stars.

Secrets of Chess Training
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (December, 1997)
Authors: Mark Dvoretsky and Howard Turner
Average review score:

The bright side of chess analysis
I am on the middle scale of chess rating (~1700) so the reader needs to factor this.

Mr. Kotov provides a scientific approach to chess calculations. In reality chess cannot be defined. Science just helps. What makes a better help is actual life lessons.

This is really what this book is about. It does not matter how strong is the material of this book, whaich I am sure is for the very advanced player, but the style of thinking that everyone should be looking for. We are not computers, so pretty suitable for Mr. Kotov's work, but we are human beings that we need to factor many things when it comes to playing chess.

The reader will not regret the time spent in front of this book as the material is very enjoyable to read as well as the sujects presented.

The book presents to the reader an approach in thinking, i.e. analysing, in chess with a support from a great chess trainer and games played by GMs. What else you might ask for?

I hope this review does not look like I am selling this book or the book is like a magic stick that will do mirecles for the reader. The book, above all, needs dedication and determination from the reader to gain the required benefit.

Good luck and happy reading.

A fine work
I am not completely through this work, but it was very informative on the endgame. Some may look for more than that, but we are reminded that "Opengins teach you openings, endgames teach you chess". Dvoretsky has good reason to be considered the best trainer in the world.

Secrets of the Ocean Realm
Published in Hardcover by Carroll & Graf (01 November, 1997)
Authors: Michele Hall, Howard Hall, and Peter Benchley
Average review score:

A poetic underwater journey!
Stare at the beautiful underwater photographs. Sitback, relax and gently discover the Ocean Realm with the still images of Howard Hall and his wife Michele, images that, as Peter Benchley (Jaws, The Deep) writes in the foreword, are among the finest in the world. Dive. Wander through the Kelp forests of the northern Pacific. Get a close-up of sharks and squids in magic detail. Enjoy the vivid colors of the reef and watch lobsters and sea turtles, dolphins and whales in an exciting photographic journey! Since this book is not a reference work, you will also enjoy reading it slowly and in the direction of your choice, diving at pleasure through the light text that describes the Hall's adventures as filmmakers and marine photographers. And then you will also find some information about the sea-life captured in the images and poetic hints about scuba-diving and underwater photography. A nice dive, a pleasant reading and, at the price that Amazon.com is offering it, a real gift. Buy the book!

A Must Read for Fin Fans!
For those of us who read everything we can on underwater photography, this book provides an added dimension and delightful reprieve from the technical how-to's of most underwater photography books. This book is a series of fascinating stories about the adventures and mis-adventures Howard and Michelle and their staff encountered when shooting different subjects. A fascinating and stimulating book, it provides anecdotal insight into how they approach certain projects without dwelling on the technical "how to's" found in most underwater photography books. Everyone studying underwater photography or just enjoying the sport of diving should surface long enough to give themselves this present. It sure made me want to grab my fins and camera and head off to points all around the world. Thanks to Howard and Michelle for putting together such a compelling read. And of course, it has beautiful photographs.
